Panacotta - How to makePanacotta at home?

Panna cotta is a dish that originated in Italy, and it is known by several names, such as Italian custard, Italian egg custard (although most versions of panna cotta don’t have eggs), cooked cream, or Italian pudding.

Panna cotta is a northern Italian dessert, and it first became popular in Piemonte, Italy. It normally contains sugar, gelatin, heavy cream, and assorted toppings. However, most panna cotta is vanilla-flavored. It can be made with cinnamon or caramel, but the main ingredient is always cream. It’s much the same consistency as Jell-o, but it’s more light and airy. Panna cotta is really great with strawberries and chocolate on top!

The Piemonte area is in the far northwestern part of Italy, and Turin is nearby (home to the 2006 Olympic Winter Games, and the Shroud of Turin). In years gone by, people on religious pilgrimages to Rome would pass through, especially to the Valley of Abbeys. It is near both Switzerland and France, and it wasn’t really a tourist area until after the seventies. Now, it’s a place to go for gourmet food (especially truffles and panna cotta!)

However, you don’t have to go to Italy to get panna cotta. Here is an easy recipe so that you can make this tasty dish at home:

Ingredients:

  • cups heavy cream
  • vanilla bean
  • oz. sugar (granulated)
  • packet unflavored gelatin
  • ¼ cup water
  • Chocolate or caramel syrup, strawberries, or any other toppings

Instructions:

  1. Dissolve the gelatin in the water.
  2. Pour whipping cream into a medium saucepan.
  3. Cut and scrape vanilla bean into the cream, then add the bean hull.
  4. Add sugar and mix well.
  5. Heat over a medium flame (don’t boil mixture) for 15 minutes.
  6. Remove from heat, removing and discarding vanilla bean hull.
  7. Stirring constantly, dissolve gelatin mixture into the hot cream.
  8. Pour into pudding cups that have been chilled.
  9. Allow to set in refrigerator for at least four hours.
  10. When ready to eat, turn the pudding cups out on to individual serving plates, topping with chocolate, caramel, or anything you’d like.
  11. Enjoy!
