How Many Quarts are there in a Gallon?

Both the quart and the gallon are units of liquid measure, being used primarily by people in the United States. One gallon is equal to four quarts. However, the gallon can be broken down into smaller measurements like teaspoons, tablespoons, cups (measuring cups, not your coffee mug), pints, and quarts. Ounces are also included because they are also units of liquid measure.

*NOTE* Ounces and pints are also used as forms of solid measure, but the weight and volume aren’t always the same for solid and liquid measures. For this article, we’ll be referring to liquid measures.

Since most liquid measures are used when cooking or comparing unit pricing in the supermarket, we’ll organize the measures in a table starting with the smallest unit and working on up.

3 teaspoons= 1 tablespoon= 1/2 fluid ounce

16 tablespoons= 1 cup= 8 fluid ounces

2 cups= one pint= 16 fluid ounces

2 pints= one quart= 32 fluid ounces

4 quarts= one gallon= 128 fluid ounces
