Health Insurance for Pre-Existing Conditions

If you have health issues, it can be hard to get an affordable health insurance plan with a pre-existing condition. Most people think that if they have cancer, heart trouble or diabetes, they cannot get insurance- but that’s very rarely the case. We’ve all heard stories about people being denied coverage, or having coverage that’s so limited that it’s not really beneficial.

There’s a way of determining whether you have a pre-existing condition. If you have to ask if your condition is covered, it’s pre-existing. Any illnesses or medical issues you’re unaware of will be covered, however. To make sure you’re getting the coverage you need, read the fine print on the policy and talk to the insurer or agent.

To get the best deal on health insurance for a pre-existing condition, you need to shop around. Companies are competing for your business, and attitudes, rates and benefits can vary from one company to another. Sometimes, companies will insure you, but require a higher premium or impose a waiting period for coverage.

You can also consider signing up under a group health insurance plan. Most of the time, group policies (like you would get at work) will accept you regardless of pre-existing conditions. There are other ways to get group health coverage other than signing up through your employer- if you belong to a credit union or AAA, you may be eligible.

As a last resort, you can ask your state for help. Most have a state fund to cover people with pre-existing conditions, and most people can get covered. Plans offered by states aren’t usually as inclusive as private plans, but it’s better than nothing.

Don’t let a pre-existing condition get in the way of seeking medical insurance. Do your research, get and compare quotes, and you may find that getting health insurance is easier than you thought before.
