Hair Loss Remedies – Which have a strong scientific basis?

Hair Loss Remedies - Which have a strong scientific basis?

Cultures worldwide have tried for thousands of years to treat balding, graying, and thinning hair. Each civilization used local plants and sources, along with their own traditions, but most remedies have a lot in common. For example, stinging nettles have been used in diverse places around the world as a hair-loss treatment.

Rather than focus on the more unorthodox hair loss remedies we’ve found, we’ll discuss those that have a strong basis in scientific fact. Most of these come straight from a great book called Hair Loss Prevention Through Natural Remedies. They are:

  •             Apple cider vinegar
  •             Rosemary oil
  •             Essential oils
  •             Hair tonics with cayenne peppers

Apple cider vinegar is a common folk remedy for hair loss, and it’s thought to balance the pH and oil levels of the scalp, as well as a clarifying effect. Apply it to the scalp with a cotton ball and wait before shampooing.

Rosemary oil can stimulate the hair’s roots and cleanse the scalp. Combine it with ground sage and nettles in a pint of grain alcohol for a week, and combine the strained mixture with one ounce each of olive and castor oils, and one ounce of water. Shake well and apply to the scalp before bedtime.

Essential oils have long been known to increase circulation and cell growth, and those most commonly used for hair regrowth are sage, lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, and clary sage. Ten drops of essential oil to one ounce of jojoba oil, massaged into the scalp, should provide maximum effect.

Cayenne pepper hair tonics will irritate the skin, increase blood circulation to the scalp, and stimulate the regular division of cells. Mix four ounces of cayenne with one pint of vodka or grain alcohol. Let it stand for two weeks, shaking bottle once per day. Strain and apply mixture to the affected scalp areas.
