Basement Flooring Ideas

If you are looking to finish your basement by putting in new flooring, there are many great and inexpensive ways to do it. You can do pretty much anything with your basement floor that you could do anywhere else in your home, as long as you take into account what you will use your basement to do. Kids grow up, hobbies and interests change, and you want to make sure that you get full use out of your basement for as long as you own your home. If you’re planning on converting the basement into another bedroom or for a recreation room, carpeting or wood flooring is a good option- but keep in mind that your basement is always vulnerable to flooding and moisture. To be safest, consider outdoor carpeting, acid etching on concrete, and laminate flooring. When choosing your basement flooring, keep in mind your local building codes. There are laws regulating the height a basement can be away from the home’s ceiling, and certain types of flooring can break that requirement. That can lead to headaches when the home is resold, and to avoid them, always research your locality’s laws on ceiling height. The least expensive and best do-it-yourself option is to acid etch your concrete floor. All you have to do is use masking tape to create tiles, and then apply the acid wash to the floor. After your floor is sealed, it will closely resemble a conventional tile floor. People with an artistic leaning like this method, but remember, once it’s done it’s there for life- as it’s expensive to pull up a concrete floor. There are craftspeople that can use concrete to duplicate the look of certain types of tile, so if you aren’t the DIY type, you can hire someone to acid etch your floor. | |
